[sci 10] for Friday

16 01 2008

Here are some questions for our film-showing “An Inconvenient Truth” this Friday.  I don’t think we’ll be able to finish the film in one session, so the next one will be on Monday–

  1.  Explain the relationship between global warming and the incidence of storms.  Is this applicable to our own experience with Philippine weather?  Why or why not?
  2. Is there any connection regarding the presence/absence of social stratification in our country and global warming?  Why?
  3. Al Gore is a “double narrator” in the movie–interspersed with his lectures are his own anecdotes or personal accounts about his life as a family man and a politician.  Is his style an effective way of promoting the issue?  Does he propose solutions throughout the movie?
  4. You are your own “double narrator”–correlate your personal experiences with global warming/climate change.  Propose solutions which are doable in your own capacities.

[sci 10] 2nd plenary

7 01 2008

” Now comes the threat of climate crisis – a threat that is real, rising, imminent, and universal. Once again, it is the 11th hour. The penalties for ignoring this challenge are immense and growing, and at some near point would be unsustainable and unrecoverable. For now we still have the power to choose our fate, and the remaining question is only this: Have we the will to act vigorously and in time, or will we remain imprisoned by a dangerous illusion?…

… We, the human species, are confronting a planetary emergency – a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here. But there is hopeful news as well: we have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid theworst – though not all – of its consequences, if we act boldly, decisively and quickly. ”

– Al Gore, acceptance speech
Nobel Prize, 10 December 2007
